How to get health insurance for senior age parents who have greencard status?

My mother-in-law is in her 70s and in fairly good health, but the problem is her insurance. She never worked in this country, and will not be eligible for medicare/medical/medicaid for 5 years (due to green card/residency issues). She currently is a member of Kaiser, but due to her age is considered a ”high risk” patient, and her monthly premium has now gone up to $700 per month. This gives her basic Kaiser care, with co-pays for visits and prescriptions. After consulting a healthcare advocacy group who does comparisons of plans for people, their suggestion was to drop her healthcare completely and save the money. I feel this would be disastrous if something really bad were to happen to her (accident, etc.) and would like to try to present her with other options. Does anyone know of a group that is accepting members for health insurance that has good rates? (any group of people large enough can get a group plan through major insurers) Any advice welcome!

I don’t have an answer directly, but I have noticed that AARP is forever sending me information that includes insurance. Since it is a membership organization, they can get group plans that make things pretty reasonable. It’s at least a start in your research.

There may also be long-term plans that need to be looked into specifically, but if your real problem is covering the next five years, you need to have some idea of what she can expect to do when she is eligible for Medicare, and look for an insurance company that knows how to interact seamlessly (do the paperwork for you) to collect your benefits most efficiently. The modern thing is you have one card, and they can change things around in the computer according to what you need. You don’t need to keep shopping around.

If she’s generally healthy now, and has the good sense to take care of herself reasonably, she really has to figure on getting three digits together in some reasonable comfort. By the time she gets there, it will have become relatively common. Our old age statistics are going to show even more amazing improvements in the next ten years or so, as the medical improvements made for the benefit of aging Baby Boomers has its first and most dramatic effect on people who are already older, but healthy.

Cheap Health Insurance & the Cost of Living Modern Lifestyles

Finding cheap health insurance is not as easy as it used to be. Health care costs have risen dramatically over the past decade and there seems to be no end in sight. As of the time of this writing, there are over 40 million Americans without any form of health care protection. This won’t just cost them in the long run, but everyone in this country. Unpaid medical bills will gradually force doctors and hospitals to raise rates even higher. People going bankrupt because of medical debt not only eliminate their modical obligations, but all of their other debts too, leaving other businesses to hold the bag.

Please don’t get me wrong here. It’s not my intention to slam those struggling individuals that can’t afford health insurance. I’m just venting and pointing some things out for thoise that are unaware of what’s happening here in the USA.

Another disturbing fact that has come up recently is that one full third of the population of Americans is obese. Obese is considered to be 20 pounds above a persons ideal weight. This is twice as high as people in Europe, whose population is only estimated to be 17% obese. With fast food restaurants on every corner here, a fast paced lifestyle and mass marketing being done twenty four hourse per day to our kids, there’s no end in sight. I shudder to think of what the costs and availability of health insurance will be like in the next decade.

If you are in need of cheap health insurance you should always try to take advantage of any coverage offered by your employer. This will almost always be less expensive than anything you will find in the private sector. If your employer doesn’t offer cheap health insurance then you should start shopping around online by getting several free health insurance quotes and comparing offers. With any luck, something will come along that fit into your budget.

Can I deduct insurance premiums paid by a fellowship if I’m also an independent Contractor?

My primary income is derived from medical research I do which is supported by a government fellowship. I use part of the fellowship to pay unsubsidized health insurance premiums at the university I work. In addition I do condo maintenance as an independent contractor. Can I deduct my insurance premiums?

All health insurance premiums that you pay (except by payroll deduction) can be deducted as medical expenses on Schedule A if you itemize, are not reimbursed, and do not deduct them elsewhere.

If you are asking about the self-employed health insurance deduction, although often (and incorrectly) claimed by independent contractors, that deduction actually applies only to a health insurance plan that is part of your business (independent contracting), not an individual plan or the university health plan.

"Return of premium" Term Life Insurance Comes of Age

If you wish to have term life insurance to the beneficiary or offer you certain you survive the life you now have many options for the "return of premium (ROP) term life insurance. With this type of life insurance if no death benefit has been paid by the end of your term life insurance, you get back all the premiums.

With a traditional term insurance, you buy a term cover, such as 15, 20 or 30 years old, and pay a fixed annual price. If you are not within this term die, your contract ends and you get nothing, that for the "risk" that you have died, perhaps paid for.

A term life insurance ROP gives you back 100 percent of your premium money (it's tax-free) at the end of your term if no death benefit was paid. In other words: "You can Your insurance or you can rent to buy it, "says Alan Lurty, senior vice president at ING.

How much will it cost?

An ROP term Life insurance will cost more than a comparable traditional term life insurance, and there are a considerable distance between the insurers, that for the fee, plus considerable range, depending on your age and the duration of the term you want.

It really will pay to cite Shop around for the best term life insurance, but at the lower end, you can expect to pay 50 percent more than comparable traditional term life insurance. For example, if your annual rate for life insurance traditional term insurance $ 3,000, would add a ROP option could bring it up to $ 4,500 annually. On the high end, could you at 150 percent pay more and on the floor Premium, we are, so that $ 7,500 award would become $ 3,000.

Shoppers should also note that with a ROP term life insurance, usually, the longer the maturity, the less you pay in total premiums. Thus, a 30-year ROP term policy could actually costs less money at the end total, at maturity, when a 15-year ROP policy. Why is that? Because the 30-year tenure there, the insurer more time to invest his money back your premiums. So make sure to quote prices for other term lengths while getting a life insurance.

In general, you will not be returned extra premiums for drivers will be able to add the ROP term policy.

ROP term life insurance provides a way bets, no matter what happens hedge.

What if I hand my ROP policy early?

It is not wise to buy a life insurance if you do not plan themselves, on the payments. However, if you Certificates ROP term life insurance in the beginning you will be based some of your premiums back on a sliding scale, if you have considered it for a few years to get. Check Your life insurance details of the sliding scale before you buy.

Many life insurance offer does not return any premium if your life insurance Transferred within the first few years. Your life will be light on the rules for the tax, as returns begin as partial premium would and the sliding scale for the returns.

For example, just because you halfway through your term life insurance you do not do the back half of your premiums, if you give it up. The longer you hold it, the higher proportion of premium you get back up to 100 percent at the end of your term. (If you die while Their term of office will receive back your recipients without the death benefit award.)

Can I make it for less?

Life insurance companies like Genworth and ING offer two versions of ROP term life insurance, usually as basic and advanced (more expensive). Under the "basic" contract, you pay a lower interest rate Life as an improved life-insurance, because one less again, if you surrender early.

For example, if you run for 15 years, ING Life bought "basic" life insurance and ROP handed it in year 10, for 30% of your premiums would get back. If you place the ING "enhanced" 15-year life for 10 years you would get 60 percent back.

For either basic or advanced life you always get 100 Percent of your premiums back if you get to the end of your term.

Invest the difference?

Maybe now you think that would be another option, the premium difference between traditional term life insurance and ROP term life insurance to invest and take the difference. Would you like to move forward in the end? It mainly depends on your tenure track. Lurty ING offers this example: Suppose you are looking at the traditional 30-year term for $ 1,500 or ROP 30-year term for $ 2,000 a year. That is $ 500 per year you would otherwise put into investments. To immediately get back the money you would from your ROP Life Insurance at the end of 30 years, you would need to see a return on investment, premium difference of about 7-8 percent. How well your portfolio is made? Lurty says that with ROP term life insurance you do not need to have "investment, the difference concerns" because it is done for you.

Note that the example is for a 30-year tenure. ROP with short-term life insurance, like 15 or 20 years you might even yield more at the end of the term by investing the difference. And you would have the self discipline to actually invest those extra dollars every year.

Of course you should die during the term, is only the death benefit is paid out. So not see this as an investment product.

Expect to see more return-of-premium insurance, as it catches on.
